We Respect your Privacy
This Privacy Statement applies when you use our Services (described below). We offer our Members choices about the data we collect, use and share as described in this Privacy Statement, in our Cookie Policy and in your Account Settings.
1: Introduction
1-1: Our Identity
We are an online community for educators of Jesuit and Ignatian schools around the world. People use our Services to connect with other educators, establish relationships and collaborate together on projects. Our Privacy Statement applies to any Member of our Services, except where specified that it also applies to Visitors.
Educate Magis is a not-for-profit company setup in Ireland to facilitate an online community designed to connect educators from Jesuit and Ignatian schools around the world. Our registered users (“Members”) share their professional identities, engage with their network, exchange knowledge and perspectives, post and view relevant content, learn about and participate in global collaboration opportunities. Content and data on parts of our Services are viewable to non-members (“Visitors”).
1-2: Our Services
This Privacy Statement, together with our Terms of Use and our Cookie Policy applies to your use of our Services as a Member of Educate Magis.
This Privacy Statement applies to Educate Magis communications and services (referred to as “Services” from here on in).
As a Member of our Services, the collection, use and sharing of your personal data is subject to this Privacy Statement, together with our Terms of Use and Cookie Policy.
1-3: Changes to this Statement
Changes to the Privacy Statement apply to your use of our Services after the “effective date.”
Educate Magis can modify this Privacy Statement, and if we make material changes to it, we will provide notice through our Services, or by other means, to provide you the opportunity to review the changes before they become effective. If you object to any changes, you may close your account.
You acknowledge that your continued use of our Services after we publish or send a notice about our changes to this Privacy Statement means that the collection, use and sharing of your personal data is subject to the updated Privacy Statement.
2: What Data Do We Collect?
2-1: The Data You Provide Us With
You provide us with data when you register as a Member of the Community.
Registration:
To create an account, you need to provide personal data including your name, email address, city, country, role, preferred email language, school name, school city, school country and a password.
You create your own Educate Magis profile (a complete profile makes global collaboration and networking easier).
Profile:
You have choices about the information on your profile, such as which fields you choose to fill out and who you choose to share this information with. Some Members may choose not to complete all profile fields. You don’t have to provide additional information on your profile; however, profile information helps you to get more from our Services, including making it easier for other members to connect with you. It’s your choice whether to include sensitive information on your profile and whether to make that sensitive information public. Please do not post or add personal data to your profile that you would not want to be publicly available.
Note: we do not require Members to include sensitive data (e.g., race, ethnicity, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, trade union membership, physical or mental health, sexual orientation or criminal record) in their Educate Magis profile. If you choose to post any such data, it is visible to others like the rest of the profile information you provide.
2-2: The Data Others Provide Us With
Others may post or write about you on Educate Magis.
Content and News
You and others may post content that includes information about you (as part of articles, posts, comments, videos etc.) on our Services.
2-3: Through Your Use Of Our Services
We log your visits and use of our Services.
We log usage data when you visit or otherwise use our Services, such as when you view or click on content (e.g., video, blog article, etc.), perform a search on our site or share blog articles or resources. We use log-ins, cookies and internet protocol (“IP”) addresses to identify you and log your use.
2-4: Cookies, Web Beacons and Other Similar Technologies
We collect data through cookies and similar technologies.
As further described in our Cookie Policy, we use cookies and similar technologies (e.g., web beacons, pixels, ad tags and device identifiers) to recognize you and/or your device(s) on, off and across different Services and devices. We also allow some others to use cookies as described in our Cookie Policy. You can control cookies through your browser settings and other tools. For more information see our Cookie Policy.
2-5: Your Device and Location
We receive data from your devices and networks, including location data.
When you visit or leave our Services (including our plugins or cookies or similar technology on the sites of others), we receive the URL of both the site you came from and the one you go to next. We also get information about your IP address, proxy server, operating system, web browser and add-ons, device identifier and features, and/or ISP or your mobile carrier. If you use our Services from a mobile device, that device will send us data about your location based on your phone settings.
2-6: Your Messages
We store messages you send through our Services (e.g. private messages, instant chat, community conversations).
2-7: Information Provided by Your Regional Network and School
In certain cases, your Provincial, Education Delegate or Regional Network may give us your data to update our database.
If you are a Head of School or have another significant leadership role in the school your Provincial, Education Delegate or Regional Network may have provided us with your personal data (name, email address and role) to add to our searchable school database. This is to help other Educate Magis members to contact you. If you wish to have this information removed, please contact us.
2-8: Service Improvements
We are improving our Services, which means we get new data and create new ways to use data.
Our Services are dynamic, and we often introduce new features, which may require the collection of new information. If we collect materially different personal data or materially change how we use your data, we will notify you and may also modify this Privacy Statement.
3: How Do We Use Your Data?
We use your data to provide, support, personalize and develop our Services to offer you the best possible Online Community experience and to communicate with you about Community activity and global initiatives.
We use the data that we have about you to provide and personalize, including with the help of automated systems and inferences we make, our Services so that they can be more relevant and useful to you and others.
We use the data you have provided us with to contact you. See more in section 3.2.
3-1: To Provide You With Our Services
Our Services help you connect with other educators, find and be found for global projects and collaboration opportunities, to stay informed, be more globally aware and learn from the community.
We use your data to authorize access to our Services.
Stay Connected
Once you are a Member of Educate Magis our Services allow you to stay in touch and up to date with other educators and members of Jesuit educational organizations around the world. As a Member of Educate Magis you will be able to search for other members to connect and collaborate with and others will be able to search for you (for example you will be able to search for members of the community to view their profile, invite them to a group or virtual classroom/virtual connection or mention them in a conversation). Other members will be able to do the same for you and see the information you have on your profile.
We do not store personal data for Visitors, except where a Visitor submits a Contact Form. In this case we store the personal data (name and email address) provided by the Visitor in our Contact Form, together with the message sent by the Visitor as a record of their request. We store this information as long as we deem it to be of legitimate interest.
Stay Up-to-Date
Our Services allow you to stay up-to-date with news, ideas, projects events, and other global initiatives which could be of interest to you and your colleagues. We use the data we have about you (e.g., data you provide, data we collect from your engagement with our Services and inferences we make from the data we have about you), to recommend relevant content and conversations on our Services. We use your content, activity and other data, including your name and picture, to provide notices to you and the global community. For example, we may notify other members in the community that you have written a blog article, posted a conversation or created a new Connected Classroom.
Global Collaboration
Our Services allow you to collaborate with colleagues across the world and search for members in other schools to connect with. Our Services allow you to communicate with other Members via private message or instant chat and schedule virtual classroom meetings with them via Connected Classrooms.
3-2: Communications and Notifications
We contact you and enable communications between Members. We offer settings to control what notification messages you receive and to unsubscribe from our newsletter and weekly mails.
As a Member, we contact you through email, notices posted on our websites or through Private Messages or other ways through our Services, e.g. push notifications. We will send you messages about the availability of our Services, security, or other service-related issues. We also send messages about how to use the Services, functionality updates, invitations to participate in global conversations and initiatives and news from the Secretariat for Education and the Global Network. You may unsubscribe from our weekly mails or newsletter at any time by clicking the unsubscribe button at the bottom of the email. Please be aware that you cannot opt-out of receiving service messages from us, including security and legal notices.
We also enable communications between you and others through our Services, including for example invitations, private messages, conversations, groups, connected classrooms and instant chat.
3-3: Communications and Marketing
We promote our Services to you and others.
We use data and content about Members for invitations and communications promoting membership, community growth and engagement and to promote our Services amongst the community.
3-4: Research and Development of Our Services
We conduct research to help develop our Services.
Service Development
We use data, including public feedback, to conduct research and development for the further development of our Services in order to provide you and others with a better, more intuitive and personalized experience, encourage membership growth and engagement on our Services, and help connect educators to each other for global collaboration amongst Jesuit schools.
Surveys
Polls and surveys are conducted by us and other Jesuit educational organizations through our Services. You are not obligated to respond to polls or surveys, and you have choices about the information you provide.
3-5: Community Support
We use data to help you and to fix any issues you may have.
We use the data (which can include your communications) to investigate, respond to and resolve complaints and Service issues (e.g., bugs).
3-6: Additional User Insights
We use data to generate additional insights into Community behaviour. This data is both from Members and Visitors but does not identify you.
We use your data to produce and share additional insights that do not identify you. For example, we may use your data including inferences drawn from data about you such as your country or region to generate statistics about our members and visitors, their subject areas, to analyze which content is most useful and to help us understand user preferences and improve our Services.
3-7: Security and Investigations
We use data for security, fraud prevention and investigations.
We use your data (including your communications) if we think it’s necessary for security purposes or to investigate possible fraud or other violations of our Terms of Use or this Privacy Statement and/or attempts to harm our Members or Visitors.
4: How Do We Share Information?
4-1: Through Our Services
Any data that you include on your profile and any content you post or social action (e.g. likes, comments, shares) you take on our Services will be seen by other Members.
Profile
Your profile is fully visible to all Members. You may change the settings in your profile to decide whether you would like certain information to be visible only to friends or only to you instead of to all Members. This information is not visible to Visitors.
Conversation Posts, Status Update, Comments, Messages, Group Activity, Global Stories, Photos, Connected Classrooms, Messages
Our Services allow viewing and sharing information including through conversation posts, likes and comments. As a Member of Educate Magis you consent to have your content and personal data visible in the following ways:
- Conversations – when you start a new conversation this may be seen by Members and Visitors. Replies to a conversation can only be seen by Members.
- Status Update – when you share a personal update this update will be seen by all members. This will not be seen by visitors.
- Comment – when you add a comment to any of the resources or resource reflections this will be seen by all members. This will not be seen by visitors.
- Messages – when you send a private message this will only be seen by the Members you send it to. This will not be seen by visitors.
- Group Activity – when you post a conversation, comment or update in a group all members of this group may see this. If the group is public, all Educate Magis Members will also be able to see it. If the group is public, only the group members will be able to see it. This will not be seen by visitors.
- Global Stories – if you share a blog article with Educate Magis we will post it on our Global Stories page and it will be seen by all Members and may be seen by Visitors. This content may also be shared by other Members on other services (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
- Photos – if you upload a photo to Educate Magis or ask us to upload a photo it will be seen by all Members and Visitors. This content may also be shared by other Members on other Services (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
- Courses – if you create a course or lessons as part of a course on Educate Magis, your personal data will be visible to all Members. Your name may also be seen by Visitors.
- Connected Classrooms – any content you post within a Connected Classroom will be seen only by Members. As the owner of a Classroom you can decide which Members you would like to accept or invite into your Classroom. Video recording of a Video Connection is not allowed. If video recording is required you must ask the Educate Magis team to turn on this functionality. In the case of a video recording, the video will be available only to the person who has recorded the Virtual Classroom. If you would like access to this video you may contact the Educate Magis team. In the case of a video recording, all members of the Virtual Classroom will be made aware before the video is recorded.
4-2: Service Providers
We may use others to help us with our Services.
We use others to help us provide our Services (e.g., maintenance, analysis, audit, marketing and development). They will have access to your information as reasonably necessary to perform these tasks on our behalf and are obligated not to disclose or use it for other purposes.
4-3: Legal Disclosures
We may need to share your data when we believe it’s required by law or to help protect the rights and safety of you, us or others.
It is possible that we will need to disclose information about you when required by law, subpoena, or other legal process or if we have a good faith belief that disclosure is reasonably necessary to (1) investigate, prevent, or take action regarding suspected or actual illegal activities or to assist government enforcement agencies; (2) enforce our agreements with you, (3) investigate and defend ourselves against any third-party claims or allegations, (4) protect the security or integrity of our Service (such as by sharing with companies facing similar threats); or (5) exercise or protect the rights and safety of Educate Magis, our Members, personnel, or others. We attempt to notify Members about legal demands for their personal data when appropriate in our judgment, unless prohibited by law or court order or when the request is an emergency. We may dispute such demands when we believe, in our discretion, that the requests are overbroad, vague or lack proper authority, but we do not promise to challenge every demand.
4-4: Change in Ownership
We may share your data if another entity takes ownership of Educate Magis, but it must continue to be used in accordance with this Privacy Statement.
We can also share your personal data if another entity takes ownership of Educate Magis. Any other entity which takes ownership of Educate Magis will have the right to continue to use your data, but only in the manner set out in this Privacy Statement unless you agree otherwise.
5: Your Choices & Obligations
5-1: How Long Do We Keep Your Data For?
We keep most of your personal data for as long as your account is open.
We retain your personal data while your account is in existence or as needed to provide you Services. This includes data you or others provided to us and data generated or inferred from your use of our Services. Even if you only use our Services every few years, we will retain your information and keep your profile open until you decide to close your account. In some cases we choose to retain certain information in a depersonalized form.
5-2: Your Rights to Access and Control Your Personal Data
You can access or delete your personal data. You have choices about how your data is collected, used and shared.
We provide you with choices about the collection, use and sharing of your data in relation to deleting or correcting data you include in your profile, controlling the visibility of the data in your profile and controlling our communication with you.
For personal data that we have about you:
- Delete Data: You may request to have your data erased (e.g., if it is no longer necessary to provide Services to you). To do this, please email operations@educatemagis.org with the subject line “Data Deletion Request”. Note: requests must include scanned copies of two different forms of IDs, sent as an attachment.
- Change or Correct Data: You can edit some of your personal data through your account. You can also ask us to change, update or fix your data in certain cases, particularly if it’s inaccurate.
- Object to, or Limit or Restrict, Use of Data: You can ask us to stop using all or some of your personal data (e.g., if we have no legal right to keep using it) or to limit our use of it (e.g., if your personal data is inaccurate or unlawfully held).
- Right to Access and/or Take Your Data: You may request a copy of your own personal information. To request this data, please send an email to operations@educatemagis.org with the subject line “Data Access Request”. Note: requests must include scanned copies of two different forms of IDs, sent as an attachment.
We do not keep personal data for our Visitors, except where a Visitor has submitted a Contact Form. In this case we store the personal data (name and email address) provided by the Visitor in our Contact Form, together with the message sent by the Visitor as a record of their request. We store the information for as long as we deem it to be of legitimate interest.
5-3: Account Closure
When you close your account your data disappears from our Services and database. In certain circumstances we may keep some data.
If you choose to close your Educate Magis account, your personal data will generally stop being visible to others on our Services with immediate effect. If you choose to close your account, your personal data will be deleted from our database with immediate effect, except as noted below.
We retain your personal data even after you have closed your account if reasonably necessary to comply with our legal obligations (including law enforcement requests), meet regulatory requirements, resolve disputes, maintain security, prevent fraud and abuse, enforce our User Agreement, or fulfill your request to “unsubscribe” from further messages from us. We will retain de-personalized information after your account has been closed.
Information you have shared with others (e.g., through private mail, updates, conversation or group posts) will remain visible after you closed your account or deleted the information from your own profile or mailbox, and we do not control data that other Members copied out of our Services. Content in groups and conversations associated with closed accounts will show an unknown user as the source. Your profile may continue to be displayed in the services of others (e.g., search engine results) until they refresh their cache.
6: Other Important Information
6-1: Security
We monitor for and try to prevent security breaches. Please use the security features available through our Services.
We implement security safeguards designed to protect your data, such as HTTPS. We regularly monitor our systems for possible vulnerabilities and attacks. However, we cannot warrant the security of any information that you send us. There is no guarantee that data may not be accessed, disclosed, altered, or destroyed by breach of any of our physical, technical, or managerial safeguards.
6-2: Processing Data In Other Countries
We may store and use your data outside your country. We make sure this is done safely and in accordance with our security measures.
Our third-party service providers may be based in countries outside your country of residence, including the United States, and may have different data protection laws than in your country. These third-party service providers are required to protect Personal Data entrusted to them and not use it for any other purpose than the specific service they are providing on our behalf. Where we ask third parties to work on our behalf, we ensure that they have sufficient information security measures in place before sharing information. We process all our data in accordance with GDPR effective as of May 25th 2018.
6-3: Lawful Bases for Processing
We have lawful bases to collect, use and share data about you. You have choices about our use of your data.
We will only collect and process personal data about you where we have lawful bases. Lawful bases include consent (where you have given consent) and “legitimate interests”.
At any time, you can withdraw consent you have provided by going to settings.
Where we rely on your consent to process personal data, you have the right to withdraw or decline your consent at any time and where we rely on legitimate interests, you have the right to object.
