Responding to Injustice: An Ignatian Approach – Teaching Module

The Jesuit Education Desk of the Irish Jesuit Missions shares « Responding to Injustice: An Ignatian Approach » a teaching module that seeks to introduce students to concepts concerning justice and injustice and to develop, through a pedagogy of understanding and reflection, their capacity to respond to injustice more effectively.

« Within the framework of the Education for Justice and Reconciliation Programme, this module seeks to inspire a ‘faith that does justice’. It brings to the fore Arrupe’s view that we cannot separate ‘action for justice’ from the ‘proclamation of the word of God’. This module upholds the Jesuit educational objective which is to ‘form men and women for and with others … men and women of competence, conscience, and compassionate commitment.’ Thus, it is an expression of the Human Excellence that Jesuit education seeks to offer its students. »

This teaching module consists of twelve sequential lessons leading to a concrete response. The lessons comprise an array of teacher-led,  student-led, individual, and group activities. The use of visual images such as Photo Cards, audio-visual clips, questions, worksheets, role plays, reflection, meditation, and class discussions demonstrate this. While the module is generally aimed for Junior Cycle Religious Education students, it can be taught as a stand-alone teaching module within the Senior Cycle Religious Education curriculum.

Additionally, if you see fit, use this video ‘Justice: A Christian Understanding’ to introduce the teaching module. This is a short video that introduces and identifies the two key aspects to a Christian Understanding of Justice; forming good relationships and doing what is needed to ensure all people in the world flourish.
