The Journey Towards Hospitality – Activity Handbooks for Secondary and Primary Schools

The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) of Latin America and the Caribbean have shared two great activity handbooks with the teachers of our global community. These activity handbooks are now available to download through Classroom Materials in Educate Magis. There are two versions, one for secondary schools “The Journey Towards Hospitality – Secondary Schools”, and another for primary schools “The Journey Towards Hospitality – Primary School”

The handbooks were created as part of a Campaign for Hospitality organised by the Jesuit Network for Migrants in Latin America and the Caribbean (RJM LAC) together with other sponsor organisations. The aim of these handbooks is to enable children in Secondary and Primary education to learn how to acknowledge the reality of migrants, refugees and forcibly displaced people; to discover the richness of cultural diversity and intercultural societies; to welcome and respect everyone; to defend the dignity and rights of foreigners, forced migrants, refugees and displaced people.

The handbooks include a number of activities, split across four different phases, which can be carried out in the classroom or adapted for online learning, and which unfold a powerful learning journey to help us understand why hospitality is important. We do this by diving into identity and diversity, walking alongside others, the history of human mobility and its causes, fears prejudices, and steps to carry out afterwards.

Let us know how you use these materials in your classroom. Share your ideas and experiences with other teachers in our global community.
