If you are familiar with the Jesuits, you will surely know that their formation is famous for being long and deep. However, St. Ignatius, though a learned man, was never an academic. Why, then, do Jesuits spend so many years of their youth in study rather than in the apostolate? It all stems from the experience of St. Ignatius, which is reflected in the definition of the Jesuits found in the Formula of the Institute: men altogether humble and prudent in Christ, and marked for purity of Christian life and learning.
