In this lesson, students will consider the role that service plays in improving people’s lives and the planet. They will be introduced to selected examples of service and explore tools used in conducting a needs assessment and developing a response to the need. Students will make a case for a recipient to receive an “Exemplary Service” award and present their recommendations. Examples in this lesson are selected nominees from CNN Heroes, but teachers may use a different source that reflects individuals from their own contexts.
