Out Students Reflected on The World Today as Part of the Global Project “The World that Christ Desires”- Saint Ignatius’ College, Adelaide, Australia

The Year 8 Art students (13 year olds) at Saint Ignatius’ College, Adelaide responded to the task entitled, “The World that Christ Desires” by observing the current state of the world. They were encouraged to reflect on the world today and to identify what is beautiful and true as well as things that need to be improved.

We invited them to gaze with gratitude, and with a practical spirit for change, in order to remain hopeful. This focus inspired the development of positive and relevant imagery.

Students reflected and then brainstormed ideas collectively. As initial ideas and concepts were explored, deeper discussion took place which led to the formulation of meaningful symbols and how they would be drawn and coloured.

A selection of highly regarded artworks that depict themes relevant to “The World that Christ Desires” project were viewed. And students discussed what visual elements are most effective when desired messages need to be delivered.

Reflection before, during and after the creation of their designs was vital. Students learnt to assess what is of value and how best this can be expressed through analysis and critical thinking.  Evaluating the achievement of their visual responses and defining what overarching qualities emerged from the works was beneficial to their learning. This included assessing their work as well as that of their peers.

The use of globally recognisable imagery and strong evocative colour were identified by the students as the key elements to achieving meaningful responses.

The students ably led by their teachers produced works of which I hope Christ would be proud!
