Fr. José Alberto Mesa SJ Secretary for Education of the Society of Jesus recently visited the Dnyanamata Vidyalaya & Junior College in the Pune Jesuit Province of India. What follows is a pictorial presentation of the history and everyday life of this wonderfully diverse school campus.

It is one of the oldest and most prominent landmarks of Sangamner town, a living witness of the educational mission of the Jesuits. Dnyanamata School has shaped thousands of prominent personalities and continues to be one of the best schools in the town and District.

Founded by Fr. Schoch it was developed into a High School by Fr. John Thiel SJ and brought up to Junior College level by Fr. E.R. D’Souza SJ.

The Chapel is the centre of all activities, the abode of the “Community as Mission”.

Dnyanamata School is the main apostolate, where the academic performance shows a constant and steady increase.

Several special facilities were built in the past seven years were an IT Laboratory

  • A multipurpose hall –in memory of Fr. Thiel: A FACSI Project

Kindling other fires…..How?

Ujalo Dnyanadeepa Antari’ – « Let the light of wisdom shine forth within » is the motto of the school. It is essential to build up of the inner infrastructure by way of Staff Formation, especially in the IPP. Teachers are also trained to train themselves.

  • Daily ‘assembly’ to pray and to impart value education
  • Cultural programmes
  • Encouraging Excellence
  • Dignity of labour
  • Social Awareness

Other ministries include:

  • Dnyanamata Convent School
  • Dnyanamata Hostel – Cares for 120+ boys from faraway villages

These works are taken care of by the Jesuits outside the regular teaching work in the school. This diverse ministry in Christ’s Mission is passed on from broad shoulders of the Missionaries who paved the way. The Jesuits in Pune aim to Kindle as many Fires as possible; with their limited capacities they strive for the Magis in their service of the poor.
