Quiero compartir con ustedes este relato, mi nombre es Patricia y soy una simple mamá del colegio Inmaculada de Santa Fe, a la que la OI le transformó la vida. Todo empezó allá por el año 2009, cuando el Padre Leonardo Nardín SJ asumió como rector del colegio. A pesar de haber elegido un colegio jesuita para mi hijo, hasta ese momento, nunca había oído hablar de la oración ignaciana. La conocí durante un retiro que el colegio ofreció a los padres y, de ahí en más, ya nunca la pude abandonar.

Tras el retiro, el Padre Leonardo convocó a un pequeño grupo de padres para proponerles la “loca aventura” de rezar con nuestros hijos. El Padre había comenzado esta práctica en un colegio de Escolapias y luego la implementó en otros ámbitos educativos, siempre con muy buenos resultados. Tímidamente aceptamos, aunque no sabíamos muy bien de qué se trataba.

Durante un año, fuimos testigos privilegiados de los encuentros. Nos sentábamos en los bancos de atrás de la capilla y presenciábamos la oración guiada, exclusivamente, por el Padre Leonardo. Era un momento de gracia absoluta. Luego, en algún momento del día, volcábamos lo aprendido en papel a fin de tratar de sistematizar la práctica. Así fueron surgiendo las primeras “fichas de OI”. De a poco, y siempre acompañados por un sacerdote o un catequista, varios padres nos empezamos a animar a guiar la oración.

En 2011, el padre Leonardo extendió la convocatoria a todos los papás del colegio, y tuvo muy buena respuesta. Hoy somos 30 papás guía que trabajamos codo a codo con los catequistas y los sacerdotes para tratar de llevar a nuestros hijos más cerquita de Jesús. No es fácil combinar esta actividad con la vida diaria, el trabajo, la casa, las obligaciones… ¡pero vale la pena! Rezar con los chicos es como pasar un rato directamente en el cielo… es sentir que Jesús te habla a través de ellos… es emocionarse… es anonadarse…Cuando contemplamos la vida oculta de Jesús, muchas veces cuesta contener las lágrimas cuando los chicos te dicen que las manos de María huelen a torta o cuando, con total naturalidad, te cuentan cómo jugaron y tomaron la merienda en casa de Jesús…

La práctica hoy está plenamente instalada y consolidada en los 7 grados de primaria. En secundaria, hay oración ignaciana en los 3 primeros años, al principio guiada por un maestrillo y luego ¡¡por los mismos chicos!! Y se planea enseñar a los chicos en los dos últimos años a armar una contemplación ignaciana a partir de un texto bíblico, de tal modo que puedan mantener su unión con Dios echando mano del método ignaciano de nutrirse de la Palabra de Dios. Los encuentros se realizan una vez cada quince días y duran aproximadamente 40 minutos, en los que se siguen todos los pasos recomendados por S. Ignacio. Los guías cuentan con fichas, diseñadas por el Padre Leonardo, que actúan como hilo conductor de la práctica. Dos veces al año, papás guía y catequistas nos reunimos con el rector para recibir pautas y compartir lo vivido; también se nos aconseja participar de los Ejercicios en la Vida Cotidiana a cargo de un jesuita, organizados por el colegio, para abonar nuestra vida espiritual.

Los frutos son notables a todo nivel: los chicos tienen mayor capacidad de guardar silencio, concentrarse, profundizar, abstraer, aplicar criterios evangélicos en la vida personal, discernir, gustar de las cosas de Dios.

En mayo de 2016, tras casi 7 años de práctica ininterrumpida, se organizó el primer taller de oración ignaciana para directivos, catequistas, padres y pastoralistas jesuitas. 30 participantes de distintos puntos de la Argentina, Uruguay y Paraguay aceptaron la convocatoria y lo vivido superó todas las expectativas. Hoy, ellos están organizando cómo implementar esta práctica en sus colegios.

Por eso, queremos aprovechar esta oportunidad que nos brinda Educate Magis y compartir esta experiencia con toda la comunidad  jesuita; animarlos a implementar esta práctica, e invitarlos a visitar el blog de oración ignaciana http://oracion-ignaciana.blogspot.com.ar/ donde  van a acceder a un material exclusivamente diseñado y adaptado a las necesidades y al estadio evolutivo de los niños. Aun no está totalmente terminado, pero estamos trabajando para lograrlo pronto. También estamos traduciendo el material al inglés.

Este año el Padre Nardín SJ nos abandona porque asumirá el cargo de Director de Educación de la Provincia Jesuita Argentina-Uruguay y de Presidente de RAUCI, pero ha dejado en el colegio un gran legado: la oración ignaciana para niños. Creo que este es el mayor tesoro… la dracma perdida… la increíble aventura de rezar con nuestros hijos.  ¡Muchas gracias!

Hi! I would like to share a story with you. My name is Patricia, and I am just a mom from Santa Fe (Argentina), whose life has been completely transformed by the Ignatian prayer experience.  It all started in 2009, when Leonardo Nardín SJ became the headmaster of Inmaculada school. Although I had chosen a Jesuit school for my son, I had never heard such a thing as the Ignatian method for praying. I got to know about it during a retreat aimed at students’ parents; and since then, I cannot imagine my life without it.

After the retreat, Father Leonardo invited a small number of parents to embark on the “crazy adventure” of praying with our kids. He had put this into practice while working at a school of Escolapias, and had also tried it in different environments with excellent results. We shyly accepted the invitation, though, to be honest, we didn’t know much about it.

For a year, we attended the meetings, which were led exclusively by Father Leonardo. We sat at the back in the primary school chapel and enjoyed this time of absolute grace. Later during the day, we made notes in an attempt to systematize the practice. And thus, little by little the first “written guides” of the Ignatian prayer began to appear. As time went by, some parents were game for and started leading the prayer, always accompanied by a priest or a catechist.  

In 2011, the invitation was extended to all the parents at school, and it was welcome. Today, there are over 30 moms and dads who work hand in hand with priests and catechists to draw our kids closer to Jesus. It is not easy to combine this activity with everyday life responsibilities (a job, the housework, etc.), but it is worth the effort!! When you are praying with the kids, it is like being in Heaven… Jesus speaks through their lips… you feel emotional … joyful… speechless with admiration. It is hard not to get misty-eyed when you engage them in a contemplation of Jesus’ childhood, and they mention things such as: “Virgin Mary’s hands smell of yummy cake” or “Jesus invited me over to his house to play”, as if these were the most natural things in the world.

Nowadays, Ignatian prayer has become a well-established activity throughout the primary school grades. In high school, the prayer is led, at first, by a Jesuit novice and then by the students themselves!! And they are planning to train students in the last years into designing a contemplation practice based on a Bible text, so that they can resort to the Ignatian method to cultivate their relationship with God. The meetings take place once every fortnight and they last around 40 minutes. The parents who lead the prayer follow the steps mentioned in the guides written by Father Leonardo. We hold two meetings a year: one at the beginning to receive instructions and the other at the end, to share our experiences. We are also advised to attend the Spiritual Exercises in Daily life to nurture our spiritual life.

This activity has been very fruitful at different levels: students find it easier to remain in silence, to concentrate, delve deeper into concepts, make abstractions, apply gospel values to their personal life, engage in discerning, and “taste” the things of God.

In May 2016, the first Workshop on Ignatian Prayer for Children was held in Santa Fe. Around 30 people (headmasters/headmistresses, catechists, religion teachers and parents) from all over Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay attended this three-day course, which exceeded our expectations by far. Now, they are working hard to implement this practice at their schools.

This year, Father Nardín SJ will leave us to become the Director of Education of the Uruguay-Argentina Jesuit Province; but he has left a legacy that will outlast him − the Ignatian prayer for children and adolescents. This is the hidden treasure… the lost coin… the amazing adventure of praying with our kids.
