The 2019 International Student Leadership Conference (12th-14th April 2019)  will bring together students from the UK and others from schools all over the world. We already have bookings confirmed from Jesuit schools in the US and throughout the European province.

This year’s Conference will be opened by Lord Blunkett. Blind since birth, and coming from a poor family in one of Sheffield’s most deprived districts, David Blunkett rose to become one of UK’s most prominent figures in UK politics in the 1990s and the 2000s. He has a fascinating story to tell.

Once again we will be joined by local politicians including our local MP as well as others who will share their personal story with the delegates. We will be inviting students to make a presentation themselves and to share their own stories and the leadership stories of their schools with others.

Prior to arrival we will circulate materials to all of those who are attending to start the conversations.

Reflections on last year

Last year’s inaugural Mount Leadership Conference brought together students from across the world. Schools from all over the UK from Italy, Spain, Argentina and the United States were represented meaning that we enjoyed a truly global exchange of ideas.  The tone and focus of the conference was set by the opening presentation from Fr Adrian Porter SJ, the Education Delegate for Jesuit Schools in the UK who confronted the conference delegates with questions around Conscience and Leadership. Further challenging and interesting input came from Brendan Friel of CISC and the inspirational John Patterson who works with visually impaired student leaders all over the world. The delegates took the opportunity to challenge local MP Lee Rowley when he joined the Conference. The delegates challenged him over Brexit and UK foreign policy especially in relation to Syria and the global refugee crisis. Among the most popular speakers was the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Ann Murphy who shared her own personal story and discussed the role of women in leadership. But perhaps the most fruitful and valuable aspect of the conference were the presentations made by the delegates from each of the schools who gave fascinating insights into life as a young adult in different schools and in different contexts. The delegates all stayed over in the school for the weekend and shared life together for three days.

A Central Location

Our location in Derbyshire, in the heart of England, makes us easy to reach by road, rail and air. We are approximately 90 minutes from London by train and within easy reach of Manchester, East Midlands and Birmingham airports.

Those travelling longer distances may want to discuss options for extending their stay before or after the Conference.

What will it cost?

The Conference itself is free. We only ask for each school to make a contribution towards the costs of accommodation and meals which will be £125 for those arriving on Friday 13th and departing on Sunday 15th. For those living in the vicinity of the school or making their own accommodation arrangements the day Conference rate is £10 which includes lunch or £20 which is full board, including breakfast and dinner. We are happy to negotiate a rate for extra days for those wishing to arrive earlier or stay on after the Conference.   You will be responsible for transport costs to and from the airport/train station. We are however pleased to arrange this for you.

Those wishing to remain on after the Conference has concluded can talk with us about how they avail of the opportunity to visit some local attractions. Oxford, Cambridge, York, Alton Towers, the Peak District are all within easy reach of the school.
