«INIGO» The publication of the world premiere play about Ignatius of Loyola by Jonathan Moore (award winning actor, writer and director. BBC tv and Radio, Royal Shakespeare Co, Donmar, West End, Royal Opera, English National Opera, Shakespeare’s Globe, member of Artistic Advisory Committee at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art etc. www.jonathanmooreuk.com)

After triumphant runs to rapturous, inspired audiences in London (greeted with enormous enthusiasm throughout the British province of Jesuits, the wider community of clergy and religious as well as the general public), the text of the play has recently been published with a foreword by Mark Lawson, the leading British arts broadcaster and critic, who interviews Jonathan here:

It is a loving, lively, relevant and often funny portrayal of the saint. The British and Irish Jesuits have already ordered the books for use in schools and colleges and on the mission in Harare.

«We are absolutely delighted with it. Ignatius emerges as such a fascinating character in the play. You seem to have a great grasp of his spirituality and how the Jesuits were born. It is a real work of art that long may live when you and I are gone! Well done.»

Myles O’Reilly SJ, Gonzaga College, Dublin writing to Jonathan Moore.

«Jonathan Moore makes Ignatius accessible to us, capturing much of the drama of the Spiritual Exercises themselves, an excellent discovery for schools and colleges. I hope that is something we may look forward to.»

The play vividly brings Ignatius and the founding Jesuits to life for a contemporary audience. It would be ideal for use as a text for study, campus ministry, evangelisation, spirituality, and/or to be dramatised by students.

There could be possibilities of workshops with the students and Jonathan Moore (schedule permitting) if this were of any interest.

The use of the play text for the students with their teachers for their own study and stagings of it could be fun and fruitful. Perhaps you could kindly forward this to any relevant HODs.

Inigo, Jonathan Moore (Aurora Metro) Book review, The Stage.

This is the most interesting play text to have reached me for a while, not least because I keep running into actors who were involved in the runs, directed by the playwright, at the White Bear and the Pleasance earlier this year. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits is not the most obvious choice for a play subject until you remember that he was effectively a counter-cultural radical fighting an implacable establishment – suddenly it’s both topical and relevant. I hope this thoughtful, engaging – and very funny in places – eight-hander will get more outings very soon. If not read the text anyway.

«The intelligence of the production, and especially the vitality and versatility of the performances make for a moving, stimulating and enjoyable experience. The structure and dynamism of the play, the art with which Jonathan Moore makes Ignatius accessible to us, capturing much of the drama of the Spiritual Exercises themselves, would also make ‘Iñigo’ an excellent discovery for schools and colleges. I hope that is something we may look forward to.»

«Moore’s intelligent script… lovely moments of religious poetry and pragmatic comedy… given the current activity in Rome, this is a particularly pertinent time for this story of humility.»
