Saint George’s College in Zimbabwe Shares Morning Prayers and a Special Service for Lent

The Chaplaincy team at Saint George’s College in Zimbabwe shares some of the prayers used at the school, which you can read and download from the new Global Inter-Religious Prayers and Reflections page in Educate Magis here. These prayers are included in our morning prayer routine, before breakfast.

Moreover, at Saint George’s College we also celebrate special services during Lent, here is an excerpt from the Ash Wednesday service.

Priest

We worship and confess your divinity, O God, for you

created us in your image and formed us in your likeness.

We praise your salvation, O Lover of all.

Congregation

You gave us life by your cross and set us free by your death.

Priest

Your holy hands formed mortal man and woman from

the dust of the earth, and you molded and created them

in your image. From your own mouth, you breathed the

breath of life into them.

Congregation

You gave us life by your cross and set us free by your death.

Priest

But humanity wandered, neglected your command and was

delivered up judgment. Death now entered to distort your

creation.

Congregation

You gave us life by your cross and set us free by your death.

Priest

But even after this, o compassionate and loving Lord, your

mercy prevailed. Your hands were pierced with nails on the cross.

At the hands of your executioners, you were humiliated, and your

side was pierced to give people life. New life flowed with the blood

and water from your side, and you won the people back and

renewed them.

Congregation

You gave us life by your cross and set us free by your death.

Priest

Again today, the Church petitions you, O Lord, through the mouths

of her children with the fragrance of this incense. As in the

beginning, you created out of love and then returned to save, and

give life, visit once again your creation and grant peace to the

whole world by your cross.

Congregation

By your cross, remove anger and put an end to war.

By your cross, eliminate strife and retribution.

By your cross, calm disorders and pacify the angry.

By your cross, humble the proud, expose the self-serving and remove evil.

By your cross, curb violence and anger.

By your cross, pardon sinners, forgive wrongdoers and

guard your people who now worship before you,

for your Church glories in the sign of the Cross.

Priest

Save us and all your people. Completely perfect us in

your strength. Visit us and revive us, so that our image

may be renewed and our likeness recovered. May we

emerge from this mournful vigil with every tear wiped away in the hope of your consolation.

Congregation

Make us worthy to meet the day of our resurrection as

heirs in the kingdom. Then, without ceasing, we shall

glorify you, forever. Amen

O Lord of forgiveness you are the priest who offered

yourself on the wood of the cross for foolish people.

You sacrificed yourself for the sake of us sinners. Now, O

Lord, cancel the debt of our guilt and save us from retribution.

Be gracious also to the faithful departed, for we shall praise

you together with them, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, forever

Amen.
