On Sunday April 3rd, Clongowes Wood College SJ celebrated the ancient liturgy of Tenebrae at 9 pm GMT with the entire student body and Jesuit community.

Tenebrae  (Latin for shadows or darkness) is an ancient Christian liturgy of Holy Week dating back to the Middle Ages. The liturgy of Tenebrae is a prolonged meditation on Christ’s suffering in the days leading up to and including his Crucifixion. Music portrays his pathos and the power of silence and darkness suggest the drama of those days. In our modern and contemporary presentation of this liturgy we use film, music, poetry, and movement to bring alive the Passion narrative with a fresh and contemporary focus.

Acclaimed Irish and international soprano Celine Byrne joined the college Schola along with cellist Jane Hughes to musically chart Christ’s ultimate victory over death. The liturgy lasts approximately one hour.

We warmly invite you wherever you are to join us for this moving and deeply reflective “ liturgy of shadows”.
